Dating Someone in an Open Relationship

Understand what you are getting yourself into

Dating is already a tough situation, now imagine dating someone who isn’t single and accidentally catching feelings for them.

Yes, sometimes it works out — especially if you’re cool with being in that type of situation. But other times, if you’re monogamous especially, you most likely aren’t keen on sharing.

Don’t get me wrong, I know that some people date just for fun and aren’t looking for anything serious, so they aren’t phased by these types of situation. But what about the people who think they just want fun and then end up getting feelings for the other person?

Believe me, it happens. And it can become a huge mess for one or both of the people involved — or for all three in this case.

It’s important to understand that sex and intimacy can usually lead to feelings and emotions and they end up leading to you getting hurt. So even if you have no intention of falling for someone sometimes it can just happen without you wanting it to.

This can make a mess of things. You might even start to resent their partner, or you start to feel attached and want that person all to yourself. If you aren’t fully prepared for a situation like this then it might lead to your heart being broken.

Unfortunately, life is difficult to plan for, so what do you do when you find yourself in this sort of situation?

Don’t expect any sort of commitment from this person.

When we have high hopes and expectations it can feel soul-crushing when all we hoped for doesn’t happen.

Even if that person has feelings for you too you shouldn’t expect them to drop their main partner.

It’s up to you in the end whether you want to proceed with this situation, and if you do — proceed with caution!
