How to Prevent a Physical Data Breach

When people think about data breaches, they often imagine a hacker sneakily getting into their system wirelessly and taking sensitive information. However, the reality is that many data breaches are not remote. Instead, they are a physical security breach, where someone enters a data or server room and manually steals the data. To keep this from happening, companies need to follow these physical data security tips.

Knowing that the person responsible for any data breach will be caught can help provide a disincentive to physical theft. Try to make sure each employee has their own personal entry codes and keep track of who enters at what times. Invest in some tamper-proof security cameras that can be mounted in the server room and along access points to the server room. This can help make it easier to catch the culprit and do damage control following any potential breach.

It can be fairly easy for someone to grab a dropped badge or tag along behind another employee as they enter the room. Requiring multi-factor authentication adds an extra barrier to entering a data storage area. Just keep in mind that it can add a little extra time for employees, so managers will need to be sensitive to delays.

Each server needs to be handled as its own unit with its own security protocols. This allows for multiple security clearance levels, and it ensures that one leaked password does not let a person access all information in the building. Make sure each server has its own locking systems, credentials, and authentication requirements.
