Ethical Dilemma

Katy cringes every time she hears her friends use words like “retarded” or “gay” in a derogatory manner. Should she object when it happens, or should she let it pass so people won’t think she’s…

A Moment of Relaxation

You are walking along a bright narrow path between tall grasses sprinkled with delicate wildflowers. It’s a warm day, and the sun is bright and blinding in the clear blue sky. The earth is soft beneath your feet, and as you approach the beach it begins to get sandy. You take off your shoes to feel the earth between your toes.

The sound of the sea washes over you, welcoming you to relax, and breathe deeper. You inhale the salty sea air and sigh with content. The smell of the sea is intoxicating. You have found the most perfect spot to sit and enjoy this gorgeous moment facing the water.

A light breeze is blowing over your shoulder and someone is playing some beautiful music far away so the tones just barely reach your ears. You can feel the surface you are sitting on beneath you and you settle deeper into the moment. You are gazing out peacefully at all the different shades of sparkling blue water.

You notice in front of you, a small pile of tags and a pen. And you feel like writing on one. You write down a feeling or a memory that you don’t need here in this present moment.

Then you notice in your hand the string of a helium balloon. The cord is wrapped about your hand. You look up to see a colorful balloon bobbing around gently in the breeze. You might even feel the tug of its string in your hand.

You attach the tag you wrote on to that balloon, and launch it out to sea. You watch it drifting away, higher and higher into the clear blue sky. Getting closer and closer to the brightly burning sun.

Eventually, the balloon will disappear. But any important thoughts required for work or life that were written on that tag will only be brought back when the time is appropriate; when the wind changes direction. For now, that thought or feeling is far away.

And you begin to enjoy the lightness you feel after releasing that balloon. You may become curious about what would happen if you do it again. So you take another tag and write down something that has been weighing on you, knowing that you can tie it to another helium balloon and then watch it gracefully take off into the air.

You can continue doing this for as long as you like. Until you are feeling light and relaxed. Each time a balloon disappears over the horizon, you notice that the sun has dimmed a little in the sky. The sun will only set when all of the balloons you need to let go of have crossed the horizon.

And when they cross the horizon and the sun sets, then you will be ready to breathe even deeper, even more relaxed. You may even allow yourself to drift off easily to sleep. Listening to the waves crash along the shore.
