I was talking to Sheila about sugar addition. She describes difficulties stopping eating sugar once she starts. She wants more sugar when she eats some. This is hard around the Holidays.

It does not really matter it sure feels like and addiction she adds. Sheila thinks people need to wean off themselves slowly.

Paige describes that at her work she sees food addiction more than anything else. Working with her clients who were previously addicted to drugs and alcohol and now they are addicted to food. She sees depression and lack of money bringing out the food addiction. Creating a habitual spoiling each other with food. Paige recalls when she did this herself. Her kids were little, and she went to the store and spoiled them with junk food, and it can very easily be done. They had no money so she would get them treats and played cards. It is so easy to turn to food especially in the wet and gloomy area where we live in, there are not a lot of things in the winter months that kids want to do outside. Paige is grateful that it did not cause problems in her family and her kids are healthy.

Talking to Kayla when I asked her what foods she thinks we should avoid she said sugar of course, it lights up the same place in the brain as other addictions like cocaine for example. She said it is interesting to think about this in a molecular level and how many other things we have in our food today that we don’t even know what they are. Kayla recommends staying away from sugar if someone are recovering from addiction to prevent changing the brain chemistry. It can basically trade one addiction to another. I saw people who try to quit smoking and trading for a candy bar, then they gain weight which makes them unhappy and start smoking again to lose the weight. Kayla recommends trying to stay away from sugar, a little here and there it is ok but not every day and not with every meal…
