The Lesser Evil is Killing Us

Identifying the lesser evil is not the answer

At least we tried for the best and brightest, thinking that such people existed and would be willing, even proud, to work for us officially. The naivete of that age is breathtaking now.

While it took us decades to overcome the cost of lives, resources, and cultural devastation, the hope and confidence never returned. As a result, there is no pretense of the best and brightest in 21st century America. Instead, people would laugh at you for suggesting that people like that still exist and laugh louder if you suggested that such people would ever choose Federal employment for public service.

Our reality is psychopathic narcissists, racists, Hitler imitators, morons, and corrupt organizations dedicated to greed as the only virtue. Of course, that is not all people or organizations; in fact, it is a minority, but they are the only ones expected or, perhaps soon, allowed in the ranks of national political leadership. They have set the tone and destroyed hope.

The best we can have is a lesser evil, and it requires intense observation and a micrometer to determine a difference in relative evils. How do we measure functional insanity against blatant racism, greed, ignorance, and stupidity? Which of these is worse?

There is no standard for better, only a standard for the least worse, but that is an illusion. We rank politicians by how well they lie. The worst lie blatantly and poorly. The best lie skillfully and make us think they will do something that they will never do. So why are we surprised when the skillful liar quietly enacts horrible policies or says nothing and lets horrible policies remain in force? This is not an accident.

Commitments are lies if they are known to be impossible to keep.
