Something Used?

I am currently planning my own wedding, but I most definitely do not have upward of $30,000 to spend. As a college senior who is currently on the hunt for a post-grad job, I have a small amount of my own money to contribute. My fiancé and I are fortunate enough that both of our parents have generously offered to help pay for our wedding, and we will be planning our wedding (honeymoon included) on a budget of the $7,500 that they have offered.

I understand that big weddings aren’t for everyone, and that’s perfectly okay. For the mere cost of a marriage licence, we could just go to the courthouse with a couple of witnesses, and that would be just as much a wedding as any. However, we have chosen to throw a meaningful celebration that all of our friends and family can take part in. For a guest list of 200, this means some serious budgeting.

I chose to go shopping at Blue Sky Bridal, where brides can place their own used wedding dress in the shop and earn a sizable commission if it is sold. The Portland shop had so many dresses to choose from in all sizes and styles, and almost all of them were tagged at under $1,000. The consultants were fun, professional and super helpful in the process, and the shop had a beautiful ascetic. I was able to walk away with the dress of my dreams and money saved. Even though my grandmother ended up generously paying for my dress with no budget restrictions, I still really wanted to shop here. By purchasing a consigned dress, we were able to prevent the impact on the environment and potential unfair labor that would have gone into the creation of a new one.

Tune in later as I continue this series on planning a budget-friendly, ethical wedding.
