Information Perspective

Information as Thing by Michael Buckland broke down information is used into three distinct principles: “information as processes”, “information as knowledge” and “information as thing”.

“Information as process” is the form of imparting or communicating ideas to change what they initially know. As a student, it is akin to professors lecturing in the lecture halls as they impart the information they have to me who know nothing about their particular subject. The process of professors speaking to their students is “information as process”.

“Information as knowledge” is the form of information on the other end of “information as process”. It is the act of receiving and perceiving the beliefs, ideas and values that was told to them and adding it to the preexisting beliefs, ideas and values the receiver already possesses. In the lecture hall analogy earlier, this form would be me who are absorbing the information spoken by the professor.

“Information as thing” is the third form and is what is being relayed between those who are sending and receiving the information. In the lecture hall analogy, it is the content of what is being said and what is being perceived.

The main difference between the three principles is where they lie on the steps of acquiring and sharing information. “Information as process” would be in the beginning and “information as knowledge” would be in the end while “information as thing” would be in the middle.

One example of “information as thing” are transcripts. It embodies the knowledge of a person’s university career into something tangible. Transcripts weren’t always the way it is now. According the Committee on the The AACRAO 2016 Academic Record and Transcript Guide, transcripts used to be a two page ledger where on page dictated the person’s university career while the other addresses the demographic aspect. Over time these ledgers evolved to the transcripts we know today. The forces that shaped how transcripts are produced are:
