The process of making my eco documentary

I wanted to create a video to practice my editing skills and see if I could effectively communicate a topic.

My goal with this project was to:

This topic is important to me and I really wanted everyone to know that this is something that falls on everyone’s shoulders.

When I was making my documentary, I mostly used my laptop to record clips of me talking, with a few clips recorded on my phone to make an intro. I used Adobe Illustrator to make my thumbnail. The video itself was made inside of Adobe Premiere Pro.

A portion of my project plan

I then started my research and had to find out what exactly was wrong with the planet and what was causing harm to it, then narrow down these all to a few key points I felt like were the most significant. From this point I created a rough script that outlined what I wanted to talk about.

The rough script for my article, mainly used for outlining the order of the topics

Finally I made a proper script which went into detail about everything, it’s much lengthier and while most of it did end up in the final cut, I did choose to get rid of a small portion of it.

I started to write down ideas for what kind of shots I wanted, where I was going to go from this point, and what was working for me and didn’t work. I started putting the film together at this point, it was very basic and only really had an intro and the clips of me talking.

An early look at the timeline of my video

Overtime I added in transitions and stock footage and audio to spice it up, while also checking in with my professor for feedback. Lastly I made a thumbnail and put my documentary on youtube to wrap everything up.

My goal with the project was to make an informative video about what’s wrong with the planet’s health and how we should handle it, I feel like I accomplished this goal because I managed to make a concise video that’s to the point and directs people in the right direction.

The main difficulties I had with the project was:

What I learned is that editing a video has a lot of small details you can focus on to make the overall video feel better, there was a point where I felt like the video was mostly done and my professor had ideas on what I could still do for it, and that lead to me thinking about what little touches would really wrap the video up. I learned that I really enjoy editing and working on a video and I might want to look into it for the future.
