4 Tips to Make The Most of Your Summer

When I first stepped foot onto the UC Davis campus, I fell in love with this place and decided that this was where I wanted to transfer to. My academic journey this past year has gone beyond my expectations — I love the tight-knit community, the overwhelming amount of resources available for students, and being surrounded by peers who are talented and supportive!

Apart from all the positive, happy parts of my life at Davis, I was under pressure to look for an internship, especially when it was my last summer as an undergraduate. If you are a Computer Science major looking into Software Engineering jobs, you know that an internship will most likely lead to a full-time job offer. By the end of Spring quarter of my junior year, I was depressed, disappointed, and anxious by the thought that I might not be skillful enough to be hired full-time when I graduate. 😱

Wait… Skills! Instead of worrying about the past, I decided to work on what I can control, i.e. honing my skills! In this article, I will be sharing tips on how you can make the most of your summer even if you did not end up landing a technical internship.

I was fortunate enough to receive two scholarships over the summer:

Twilio’s SIGNAL (2019)
Abstractions II (2019)

Other than the knowledge I gained in the field, I also met software developers who gave helpful advice about transitioning into the work life. Also, FRIENDS! 🤩 I made friends that I absolutely love and treasure!

I love summer classes (obviously not the part where I’m literally living inside a toaster oven) because they are likely smaller than a regular class, and that means you get to know your professor(s) better. Plus, you don’t have to fight for a seat at your favorite coffee shop!

Our team developed an Asteroids game using Android Studio. In this Software Engineering class, we learned to collaborate in an agile environment. Each team member was given a task to work on over a sprint. We would then have stand-up meetings every week to present our progress. Following that, we would set new goals for the next sprint.

Want a break from an academic setting? Try joining a group or organization on campus, or even collaborate with your friends! This leads to my next point…

I believe the best way to learn is by doing. Personally, I became involved in front-end development after creating my own website using Bootstrap, HTML, and CSS. The site is constantly under construction, as it is where I try out new technologies and improve UX.

If you are not sure where to start, try being active on social media like Facebook and Twitter! Facebook is where I find out information about on-campus activities, and when student organizations are recruiting. In fact, I joined the Blockchain at Davis team as a front-end developer and worked with ReactJS and SASS because of my role.

The grass always seems greener on the other side, but that is not always true! Start from somewhere you can reach, forget about the “dream opportunity” that you’ve been waiting for. If applicable, sign up for your CS department’s newsletter. Take advantage of the information available for you. You’ll never know what you will come across!

Summer is the only time that you get to have time for yourself. Go on the hike that you’ve always wanted to. Go swimming! Go on a road trip! HAVE FUN! Here are some adventures I had over this summer:

Amtrak Coast Starlight — Scenic Car (2019)
Sonic Bloom, Seattle (2019)
Gum Wall, Seattle (2019)
Van Gogh in Bloom, Phipps Conservatory, Pittsburgh (2019)

All in all, if things don’t go right, MAKE IT RIGHT. You are in control of your own happiness. Relax, and believe that YOU CAN DO THIS.
