Beto goes live on Facebook for supporters

Denton locals gathered at the Denton County Brewing Company on Sunday night to watch a livestream from Beto O’Rourke after his second debate with Ted Cruz was postponed.

O’Rourke supporters and volunteers met at the Denton County Brewing Company on East McKinney for a watch party that was originally scheduled to be a debate watch party. The Facebook livestream from O’Rourke was followed by an ad shot live to combat the ads from his opponent attacking him.

“We have decided we are going to make this about and for the future because the people are depending on us,” said O’Rourke during his livestream. “We don’t like the small and petty and fearful and anxious stuff. We are going to stay focused on the big things that we can do together.”

The debate, which was scheduled for Sunday at the University of Houston, was delayed due to the Kavanaugh confirmation hearing.

“I was actually originally coming to cover the debate for one of my classes,” said University of North Texas student Tori Falcon. “I was sad when the debate was cancelled, but I figured I’d still come out and show my support. There was a really great turnout at the debate party last week.”

“The key to this election now, is getting everyone out there and actually voting,” said volunteer Mitchell Collins. “The polls don’t mean anything if people don’t get out and vote.”

The Beto O’Rourke campaign now holds the title of the second largest campaign event with about 55,000 people in attendance at his last campaign rally in Austin on September 29.

“To all of you who have been with us every step of the way or who joined us at some point along this path, thank you for making the most amazing thing happen that I have ever felt in the state of Texas before; the largest grass roots campaign we’ve ever seen,” said O’Rourke. “All people, no PACs, no Super PACs, no corporations, no special interests. Just people coming together.”

During the livestream O’Rourke encouraged people to make a plan to get out and vote and help the people around them vote. Before and after the livestream, a volunteer helped people register to vote.

“We need volunteers to help make this happen,” said volunteer Derrick Minor. “We need you guys to hep us by calling your friends, your family, anyone who you think will vote.”

Though the debate has not been rescheduled, O’Rourke kept his message positive and encouraging.

“At this very divided moment, in these highly polarized times, it’s the people of Texas who are going to bring this country together and insure that we are defined by our aspirations, the great things we want to do, and only can do when we come together,” said O’Rourke. “It’s because of your courage that we have a chance to win this right now.”

Beto volunteers and supporters talk and relax before the live stream at Denton County Brewing Company.
