The Hymen And Virginity

The hymen isn’t a reliable indicator of virginity!!!

Let’s debunk the myths, shall we?

The idea that because your wife did not bleed on your wedding night means she’s not a Virgin and so her bride price should be returned as is practised in certain African countries is total nonsense!!!

What exactly is the hymen?

The hymen is a membrane that surrounds the opening of the vagina. It comes in different shapes and some women don’t have at all. However, we have what we call an imperforate hymen which completely covers the vagina opening and stops the menstrual flow, minor surgery can be done to correct it. The correlation between the hymen and virginity is a social construct because you can’t tell if someone has had sex just by looking at the genitalia or waiting for blood on the sheets to determine she’s a Virgin and place “worth” on her as is done in certain places. Being a virgin is simply deciding not to have sexual intercourse, and it could mean different things to different people.

The hymen can be stretched open the first time one has vaginal sex which sometimes causes bleeding or pain but it doesn’t happen to everyone. Also, doing sports, riding a bike or even putting anything in your vagina like tampon or sex toy can stretch the hymen. It doesn’t mean you aren’t a Virgin because you use tampons like I said being a Virgin means different things to different people but it simply is you deciding to not engage in sexual intercourse (whatever that means for you). Some people aren’t born with a hymen either so taking a female child or adult to do a virginity test is wrong!!!

As I said, the hymen isn’t a reliable indicator of Virginity!!!
